All maritime compliance guides

All maritime compliance guides

Every guide on this site, grouped by what it is for. They cover the rules that govern ship fuel, the paperwork those rules run on, and where the two stop agreeing with each other. All of them cite primary sources and none of them require an email address.

The rules that carry a price

Start here if something has landed on your desk with a number attached.

  • FuelEU Maritime · the EU greenhouse gas intensity limit, how the compliance balance works, and the €2,400 per tonne of VLSFO equivalent penalty
  • EU ETS for shipping · allowances, the phase-in to 100% in 2026, and the addition of methane and nitrous oxide
  • The IMO Net-Zero Framework · the global measure that is approved but not adopted, with the actual GFI targets and the USD 100 and 380 remedial unit prices

The IMO framework underneath

The older layer. Less expensive, more prescriptive, and the source of most of the data the rules above consume.

  • MARPOL Annex VI · the pillar, regulation by regulation, including what happened to regulation 22A
  • Emission Control Areas and SECAs · the seven areas in force, which pollutants each covers, and what regulation 14.6 makes you record at the boundary
  • Marine fuel sulphur limits · 0.50% and 0.10%, and why in-use samples are judged at 0.53% while the delivered sample is not

The operation and the paperwork

What actually happens at the quayside, and the documents it produces.

  • What is bunkering · the three delivery modes, the fuel grades, the four sealed samples and where operations go wrong
  • The Bunker Delivery Note · the nine fields Appendix V requires, the retention clocks, and why electronic notes are allowed
  • LNG bunkering · ISO 20519, the cryogenic steps, and why methane slip now decides whether LNG pays

Where it all has to agree

  • Green shipping corridors · why 84 have been announced and four have reached realisation, and what that has to do with fuel data

Tools

  • FuelEU penalty calculator · enter fuel, GHG intensity and year. The Annex IV formula is shown in full, it runs in your browser, and there is no signup

If you do not know where to start

Three common situations and the shortest route through them.

  1. You have been asked for a compliance figure and are not sure it will hold up. Read the Bunker Delivery Note, then what it means for a shipowner
  2. You want to know what a shortfall costs. Go straight to the calculator, then FuelEU Maritime for the mechanics it does not model
  3. You are joining or building a corridor. Start with green shipping corridors and then the verifier role the regulation already requires

How these guides are written

  • Every regulatory claim is cited to a primary source or a recognised authority: the IMO, EUR-Lex, class societies or the European Commission
  • Figures are dated. Where a rule is proposed rather than in force, the guide says so and gives the decision date
  • Nothing is gated. No email, no signup, no download form

If you find something out of date or wrong, tell us. These pages are only useful if they are correct.
